Shiv Sena (UBT) Aaditya Thackeray mother-son duo recorded hanging dog death

A mother and son were arrested by the Pune Rural Police on Thursday for allegedly killing their dog by hanging it from a tree. The alleged incident took place in Pirangut area of Mulshi tehsil in Pune. The case was registered against Prabhavati Jagtap and her son Omkar Jagtap, who had the dog with them for eight years.

The incident gained attention after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray raised the incident on X (formerly Twitter). “I just came across a very, very heartbreaking image of a dog being hanged to death by its owner’s family in Pune. I’m incredibly shocked to see how people can behave like this. Besides elections and other duties, I appeal to @PuneCityPolice to take strict action against those guilty of this. It’s inhumane. Pets are family too,” wrote Aaditya Thackeray.

According to a PTI report, Senior Inspector Santosh Girigosavi of Paud Road police station said the incident took place on October 22 when Prabhavati allegedly attacked their pet Labrador with a stick. After this, her son Omkar hung the dog from a tree. Girigosavi said they were booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

The complaint was filed by Padmini Stump, an animal activist who heads the Mission Possible Foundation, which operates a shelter for dogs.

According to PTI, Stump said the family initially called a dog lover of Pimpri and asked her to come and take the dog away. However, the duo later sent images of the dog hanging from a tree. Stump said she and the people with her rushed to report a violation against them.

While speaking to ANI, she said that ten minutes after they requested time to make arrangements, they received a text message from Omkar Jagtap asking them not to send anyone with a photo of the live dog and a video of the hanging dog. After Stump filed the FIR, she took the dog in her car to Pune City for a post-mortem examination.

When asked why the family decided to kill the dog, one of the reasons Stump emphasized was that the dog’s veterinarian had suggested a rabies test be performed. “Assuming the pet has rabies, they may have killed it,” she said. Meanwhile, the autopsy revealed that the dog had been “mercilessly” beaten and hanged, Stump claimed.
