Sheffield Utd 4-2 Wrexham (13 Aug 2024) Match Analysis

Sheffield United came from behind to beat Wrexham 4-2 on Tuesday to end the newly promoted League One club’s Carabao Cup campaign.

The home side were by far the better team at Bramall Lane throughout the game, but fell behind against the run of play in the 29th minute when William Boyle scored from close range following a corner.

But the visitors were then dealt a blow when Auston Trusty’s header just over the line levelled the score before half-time, and Lewis Brunt turned a Rhian Brewster cross into his own net early in the second half to give Sheffield United the lead.

A foul on Anis Ben Slimane in the penalty area sent Brewster to the spot, but his penalty was saved. Louie Marsh managed to smuggle the rebound past Wrexham keeper Callum Burton to give United the win.

Ben Slimane scored Sheffield’s fourth goal, his first for the club since joining in 2023, and Sebastian Revan scored a consolation goal for Wrexham just before the final whistle.

It has been a remarkable few seasons for Wrexham, who have been promoted in successive years, first to League Two after the 2022-23 season and then to League One last year.

The team made a winning return to England’s Third Division on Saturday by beating Wycombe Wanderers 3-2 in their first League One match in 20 years.

There is recent history between the two sides, who played out a thrilling FA Cup fourth round replay in 2023, which Sheffield United won with a pair of extra-time goals. Including Tuesday’s result, it will be 41 years since the Welsh side defeated United.
