Shaune Mogaila released on bail as mother of girl, 9, killed in Tembisa crash, still critical in ICU

TEMBISA — Sekhukhune United player Shaune Mogaila made his first appearance in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on Friday, November 1, 2024, two days after the car crash that claimed the life of a nine-year-old girl.

Mogaila appeared in the dock with a bandage over his forehead before the court released the footballer on R20,000 bail.

He is charged with manslaughter, reckless and negligent driving and fleeing the scene of an accident. The court adjourned the matter to February 4, 2025 for further investigation and medical reports.

However, no bail conditions were set which prevented him from contacting witnesses and continuing his daily life.

Dashcam footage of the crash, taken from another vehicle, showed the footballer’s car, a black BMW, leaving the road and crashing into a red hatchback into oncoming traffic.

The accident happened at 7am on October 30 on Andrew Mapheto Drive while a female motorist was transporting her child to school.

Meanwhile, the woman and a 13-year-old who was also in the vehicle are in critical condition in hospital.

Mogaila then fled the scene, but turned himself in at Rabie Ridge Police Station later that day, where he was charged and detained.

Short news previously reported that it was unclear whether drug-related charges would be added after suspected cocaine and dagga edibles were found in his car at the scene, in addition to several bottles of Don Julio alcohol.

Since then, the mother of the deceased child is reportedly still unconscious in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Tembisa Regional Hospital.

A family member said the woman remained unconscious since the crash and was unaware her daughter was dead SowetanLIVE report.

Diamond scam accused bail postponed

In related news: Short news reported that the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court on October 31 granted bail to four others linked to a multi-billion-rand diamond fraud, along with alleged mastermind Louis Liebenberg.

He and eight co-defendants, including his wife Desiree, face 42 counts of fraud, six counts of money laundering, five counts of extortion and theft, in addition to a laundry list of charges.
