Seth Meyers jokes that RFK Jr. might not be the best person to defend Trump’s debate crisis over eating pets

Seth Meyers joked that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. might not be the best person to defend Donald Trump’s debate crisis over eating dogs and cats, given his own colorful history with dead animals.

On his Thursday night show, the host addressed the damage control actions taken by Republicans and Trump allies following his confrontation with Kamala Harris on Tuesday night.

RFK Jr. was one of many who tried to defend Trump’s actions.

In an interview with Fox News, he conceded that Harris “clearly won the debate in terms of her delivery, her sophistication, her organization and her preparation,” but claimed the Republican candidate won based on his “administration.”

Meyers played the clip before asking his audience, “Is RFK Jr. really the one the Trump campaign wants to promote right now during a national conversation about eating unusual animals?”

“The man was accused of eating a dog, said it was a goat, picked up a dead bear from the side of the road – which he later dumped in Central Park – because he wanted to eat it.”

RFK Jr. is embroiled in a furor over his wild comments about dead animals.

In 2023, RFK Jr. sent a photo of himself and a woman posing with the barbecued remains of what appeared to be a dog, Vanity Fairreported. He told his friend, who was traveling to Asia, that he might enjoy a restaurant in Korea that had dog on the menu, raising questions about whether RFK Jr. had eaten dog himself.

When the report emerged, the 70-year-old insisted the barbecued animal was not a dog, but a goat he enjoyed during a trip to Chile.

“This is me sitting by a campfire in Patagonia on the Futaleufu River eating a goat, which is what we eat there,” he told Fox News.

RFK Jr. also recently confessed to dumping the body of a bear cub in New York City’s Central Park ten years ago. This mystery lasted ten years and made headlines in 2014.

Kennedy claimed he saw a car hit and kill the cub outside New York City, and explained that he intended to skin the cub and store the meat in his refrigerator, eventually dumping it in a Manhattan park.

“Can you imagine the inside of RFK Jr.’s refrigerator?” Late Night with Seth Meyers joked.

“Where does he keep the bear meat? Next to the oat milk and the pickled pelican beaks?”

Meyers joked that even “bear carcass collector and brainworm jamboree RFK Jr” had to admit that Harris had a much better debate than he did, but that they just “hope no one saw it.”

As if the stories about the bear cub and the barbecued dog weren’t enough, RFK Jr.’s daughter also claimed in a now-surfaced 2012 interview with City and countryside that her father once decapitated a dead whale with a chainsaw and tied its head to the family minivan for a five-hour drive – forcing his children to put plastic bags over their heads to protect themselves from the “whale juice” streaming through the windows.

Meyers’ rebuke of RFK Jr. — who ran as an independent for president before suspending his campaign and endorsing Trump — comes after many Republicans admitted Trump’s debate performance was a “disaster.”

Meanwhile, some tried to spread the story that his lying performance had gone well.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy compared the debate to a wedding, telling CNBC Squawk box on Wednesday: “It didn’t go exactly as you wanted, but no one really knows that.”

When the host responded, “I think other people noticed,” McCarthy said, “Yeah, but Trump was more in control of himself than usual.”

Meyers seized on this and said, wide-eyed, “Your argument is, ‘that was better than normal’?”

“No, we definitely noticed,” he added. “We all saw it. Did the Republicans think it was just on C-SPAN and get confused?”

“Well, probably only a few people got it right,” he said mockingly. “Oh, what’s that? Was it on ABC too? Well, that’s just one big network. And NBC? And CBS? And MSNBC? And CNN? And Fox? Oh no, no, who else was at this debate? Lifetime? QVC? The Debate Fails YouTube channel?”

He added: “Even Nickelodeon had a debate feed where every time Trump yelled about eating dogs, he got smeared.”

The ABC News debate, the first between the two presidential candidates, drew an estimated 67 million viewers Tuesday night.

It now appears to be the only time Harris and Trump will debate each other, after Trump declared in a rant on Truth Social on Thursday that “there will not be a third debate.”
