Setback for Tottenham as key first-team player likely to miss Europa League opener

Tottenham Hotspur will be without vice-captain Cristian Romero for their Europa League group match against Qarabag on September 27.

The Argentine defender will miss the match due to a suspension dating back to Tottenham Hotspur’s 2022 Champions League season.

According to Alasdair Gold of Football London, Romero was sent off during Tottenham’s round of 16 clash with AC Milan two seasons ago after receiving two yellow cards.

He received his first yellow card in the 17th minute, followed by a second in the 77th minute, which resulted in his dismissal. Although Tottenham missed out on European competition last season, UEFA rules state that suspensions carry over to future tournaments. As such, Romero will serve his suspension in the upcoming Europa League match.

Impact of Romero’s absence

Romero has been a key part of Tottenham’s defence under new manager Ange Postecoglou, and his absence is a major setback.

The timing of his suspension could prove advantageous for the team, however. Spurs play Manchester United in the Premier League just two days after the Qarabag match, meaning Romero’s enforced rest could keep him fresh for the crucial clash at Old Trafford.

Radu Dragusin expected to intervene

In Romero’s absence, Romanian defender Radu Dragusin is expected to step into the starting lineup. Dragusin impressed in Tottenham’s recent Premier League clash against Newcastle, where he replaced the injured Micky van de Ven.

His solid performance showed that he is reliable as a backup option, giving Postecoglou confidence that the team can survive without Romero.

While Romero’s suspension is a setback, Tottenham will be relying on the strength of their squad to continue their positive start to the Europa League campaign.

With Dragusin likely to start, Postecoglou will be hoping his side can secure a strong result against Qarabag while ensuring key players are well rested for their upcoming Premier League fixtures.
