In a major move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has rejected the proposal of newly-appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir to appoint South African speedster Morne Morkel as India’s bowling coach.

Morkel was one of the candidates recommended by Gautam Gambhir for the esteemed position, along with former India internationals L Balaji and R Vinay Kumar.

However, according to The Hindustan Times, the board has not shown any interest in any of these players as India is still looking for a successor to Paras Mhambrey.

BCCI rejects Morkel for bowling coach role

It is not the first time that the umbrella organization has rejected Gambhir’s recommendation for the coaching staff.

Earlier, the BCCI had rejected Vinay Kumar and L Balaji, while Gambhir’s two suggestions for a fielding coach – Ryan Ten Doeschate and Jonty Rhodes – were not considered.

Since only Abhishek Nayar has got the board’s approval, it is believed that the BCCI wants an all-Indian coaching staff for the men’s team.

It is also worth mentioning that T Dilip’s contract has been extended and he will continue as India’s fielding coach.

Indian squad for SL series to be announced today

Gautam Gambhir’s first coaching assignment will be India’s tour to Sri Lanka, where they will play three T20Is and an ODI against the home side.

The squad for both series will be announced today, with Suryakumar Yadav likely to be named India’s new T20I captain.
