Hiking pants haven’t always been stylish. Given the rugged activities and natural elements they’re made for, technical specifications have historically taken precedence over cute patterns and pretty colors. That’s why I’m always looking for “laid-back” pieces that feel more runway than REI, so I can feel and look my best on my outdoor adventures. Even better if those pieces are multifunctional, as I’ve found that helps me avoid overconsumption and get creative when putting together new outfits with old pieces.

My new favorite hiking buddy checks all of these boxes and more. Seniq’s Trailmix Pants ($148) translate from trail to trendy so well that they’ve earned a permanent spot in my closet. Keep reading for my full review and why everyone should own a trail buddy like the Trailmixes.

The Seniq Trailmix Pants: My Review

What I like

When I received my Trailmix Pants, I could barely tell that they were meant for hiking, which I loved. Unlike other baggy cargo and convertible pants that can make me feel really dorky, the muted mossy colorway of my new Trailmixes was so gorgeous that I started planning my evening happy hour outfit around them. I love how slim and tapered they are, allowing me to get a tailored fit even when sizing up from my typical Small to Medium. I also love that they’re technically convertible, ditching the traditional zip-off legs for ankle cords that transform the pants into parachute pants. For the evening, I pulled them tight at the ankles and paired them with a floral top with a bow at the front and dainty black slides. Despite the loose fit and low, baggy look, I still felt ultra feminine in them.

Even though they don’t Look Just like hiking pants, they are also ideal for the trail. Made from a cooling, lightweight nylon twill, these pants are breathable, moisture-wicking, and hard-wearing, so you don’t have to worry about chafing. I usually opt for shorts when hiking in summer and transitional temperatures, but I’ve fully converted to life in pants thanks to their UPF 50+ rating that protects against the sun and provides ample insect protection. And there are so. many. pockets! Zip pockets, cargo-style pockets with snaps and even a mesh pocket inside of one of the pockets to ensure that small items like car keys and Airpods have a designated spot. For shorter walks and strolls, you can probably skip the bag altogether, there’s so much storage space in these things.

What I don’t like

Although they are perfect for me, The Seniq Trailmix pants may not be perfect for everyone. After short periods of wearing them, I noticed that the adjustable strap at the waistband did not always stay in place where I had put them on. This may have been due to sizing up, but I recommend sizing up for the most effective fit while hiking to avoid fidgeting with a loose strap.

The emphasis on breathability that these pants place on the trail makes them perfect for summer hikes, but I foresee them not being the best option for fall and winter excursions due to the lack of insulation. Finally, the $148 price tag is quite steep (though comparable to other technical hiking pants you’ll find in gear shops).

Final thoughts

If you’re going to splash out on a pair of hiking pants, you might as well opt for a pair that’s versatile enough to take you far beyond your outdoor adventures. Seniq’s Trailmix pants took me from trail to happy hour in a way that kept me feeling edgy and on-trend in both situations – how many hiking pants can do that?!
