Senior Little League Softball World Series Comes to Delaware

The softball team’s Senior Little League World Series returns to Sussex County next week, making Roxana an international gathering place.

Ten teams from around the world, including two from Delaware, will compete for the championship, while many eyes here and elsewhere will be focused on what’s happening in rural southern Delaware.

It starts on Monday and lasts until Sunday, August 3.

Where does it take place?

On the fields of the Lower Sussex Little League Complex at 34476 Pyle Center Road in Roxana.

This means that participants and fans can spend their free time at the beach and enjoy other recreational and culinary options, as the fields are located approximately 8 miles west of Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island.

Since 2004, this has been a venue for the softball World Series. The Senior League players are between 13 and 16 years old.

Isn’t this a headliner?

The tournament begins with a match between host Lower Sussex and Middletown-Odessa-Townsend on Monday night.

Although entry into the tournament is automatic for a Sussex team, MOT achieved this the hard way by winning state and regional titles.

MOT won the East Regional in Worcester, Massachusetts 5-1, beating teams from Pennsylvania and Maryland and losing to New Jersey in the pool stage. In the quarterfinals they defeated Rhode Island 13-1, in the semifinals Connecticut was still undefeated 4-3 and in the finals they defeated the host country 11-7.

The MOT team will depart by bus from Silver Lake Elementary School in Middletown to Roxana at 3 p.m. Saturday, escorted by police and firefighters.

What does the tournament schedule look like?

MOT and Lower Sussex are in Pool A, along with the Latin American champions from Puerto Rico, the Asia-Pacific winners from the Philippines and an as-yet unnamed champion from the US Southwest Regional.

Pool B has a Europe-Africa winner from the Netherlands, Canadian champions from Calgary, and U.S. champions from the West (Honolulu), Southeast (Irmo, South Carolina), and Center (undetermined).

The schedule can be viewed at www.littleleague.org/world-series/2024/slsws/tournaments/world-series.

MOT also has pool games on July 30 at 8pm, August 1 at 5:30pm and August 1 at 8pm

Lower Sussex plays at 8pm on July 30, 8pm on July 31 and 3pm on August 1.

The top four teams in each pool will advance to the quarter-finals on August 2, the semi-finals on August 3 and the final on August 4.
