Senator Alex Padilla’s DNC speech shows support for Latinos

U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) took the stage Thursday at the Democratic National Party Convention in Chicago, where he appealed to Hispanic and Latino voters and immigrants in his endorsement of the Harris-Walz ticket.

Padilla spoke about his history of working with Vice President Kamala Harris and “The American Dream.” He supported Harris for her ability to create a promising country for younger generations, based on her work as a former California attorney general and senator.

The Democratic National Committee’s convention continues through Thursday, with Vice President Kamala Harris expected to formally accept the party’s nomination for the 2024 presidential election on Nov. 5.

  • Who is he? Padilla has previously stated that he is proud to be the son of immigrants and that he believes in giving everyone a fair chance to achieve the American dream. In 2014, Padilla was elected California Secretary of State and in January 2021, Padilla was appointed to fill the vacancy left by the election of Vice President Kamala Harris and has since served as a California Senator.
  • What role does he play: As a senator, Padilla chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship and Border Security to lead consideration of immigration reform proposals, as well as oversight of federal agencies with citizenship, asylum, refugee and immigration enforcement responsibilities to develop immigration policy. Other areas of focus for Padilla include ensuring due process in the justice system, infrastructure legislation, the environment and public works, supporting renewable energy and the American right to fair elections.

The Democratic National Convention will take place August 19-22 in Chicago, Illinois.

The United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks, is the main venue for the DNC.

Chicago has hosted the Democratic Convention 11 times, most recently in 1996, when the United Center nominated President Bill Clinton for the second time.

How to Watch and Stream the 2024 DNC

The conference will be broadcast live on the United Center website in Chicago from 6:15 p.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern Time (5:15 p.m. to 10 p.m. Central Time) on Monday and from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern Time (6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Central Time) on other days.
