Selena Gomez’s ‘Emilia Pérez’ performance from Mi Camino

In Jacques Audiard‘s highly unconventional musical Emilia Perez – which debuts today in select US and Canadian theaters on its way to a November 13 debut on Netflix in the US, Canada and the UK – Selena Gomez depicts the execution of her career as the wife of a Mexican cartel chief. She and her main female costars jointly received the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival.

The role calls on Gomez to do many things she hasn’t done before, including acting in Spanish. But it also gives her the opportunity to do something she wants has have been doing it for years, and like almost everyone in the world: singing.

The Hollywood Reporter is excited to exclusively debut a clip of the scene featuring Gomez and her costar Edgar Ramirez perform ‘Mi Camino’, a song written by the French songwriting and composition team Clement Ducol And Camillewho are behind the film’s entire soundtrack and score.

“Mi Camino,” which is Spanish for “My Way,” has been described by the songwriters as the “anthem” for Gomez’s character, Jessi, as she learns to accept and love herself for who she is. They compare it to an 80s hit, but with a modern twist.

Another song had previously been written for the character Jessi, but when Gomez was cast, Audiard asked the songwriters to tailor something just for her. They went to watch the 2022 documentary Selena Gomez: My mind and meand came back with “Mi Camino.”

For their work on Emilia Perez – which also includes another Oscar candidate for Best Original Song, ‘El Mal’, co-written with Audiard – Clément Ducol and Camille have already been recognized with the Cannes Soundtrack Award, the Artistan Tribute of the Toronto International Film Festival and the Middleburg Film Festival’s Special Achievement in Music for Film Award.
