Sean O’Malley’s time as bantamweight champion came to a shocking end on Saturday when Merab Dvalishvili captured his title in the main event of UFC 306.

Unlike his previous loss to Marlon Vera, which he later avenged, this one was never in doubt. O’Malley (18-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) was outclassed by Dvalishvili (18-4 MMA, 11-2 UFC) over five rounds in a unanimous decision loss at Sphere in Las Vegas, showing that his grappling still needs to improve in execution.

O’Malley’s rapid rise to the top has seen him leapfrog many notable, ranked names in the 135-pound class. He’ll have to get through a few of them now if he ever wants to reclaim the gold, and there’s no shortage of intriguing matchups.
