Seahawks great Earl Thomas makes questionable claims about NFL legends Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu

Irrational confidence is an indispensable part of playing DB in the NFL. If you don’t think you’re the best athlete and competitor on the field and plan to prove it with every click, chances are you’re feeling ashamed. At their best, the Seattle Seahawks of the Legion of Boom era never lacked confidence – and for a while they were truly the best defense of all time – kind of like the Beatles to football.

However, that was 10 years ago. Now Richard Sherman is podcasting and starring in commercials with Kam Chancellor. We haven’t heard much from Earl Thomas, who fell out with the Seahawks and then wore out his welcome with the Baltimore Ravens very quickly.

Although he hasn’t played in an NFL game since the 2019 season, Thomas still thinks he’s the best safety in the league. He also thinks he’s better than a pair of all-time GOATs at the position, Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu. Here’s what ET Josina Anderson said about it on her new podcast.

“I know I can still play… because my chances were zero after that incident in Baltimore… It has to be a good atmosphere where coaches come out and let me play and interact. I know the plays and the formations; just an atmosphere in which they understand me. I’m still the best safety in the league… I just know, I’m better than Ed Reed. I’m better than Troy Polamalu. I know many Seattle fans will agree. I’m sure the 2013 team won’t win a Super Bowl without me.”

That last bit about the 2013 team is certainly true: Whatever else he is, Earl Thomas was the best defender on the Super Bowl-winning team, and that’s an incredibly high bar. Thomas was absolutely involved in every play and was about as submissive as any defender in the modern era. It’s a shame how his tenure in Seattle ended and he deserves to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

That said, the claim that he is better than Ed Reed is evidence that Thomas thinks just a little too highly of himself to function in a team environment. With all due respect, it’s time to find a hobby.
