Scotland’s Charlie Cassell sets record with sensational ODI debut

London: Charlie Cassell broke the record for the best bowling performance by a debutant in a men’s One-day International, taking seven wickets for 21 runs in Scotland’s eight-wicket win over Oman in Dundee on Monday.

Pace bowler Cassell surpassed the six for 16 that Kagiso Rabada took for South Africa on his ODI debut against Bangladesh in 2015.

Oman were 49-2 in the Cricket World Cup League 2 match at Forthill when Cassell was brought in in the 12th over.

He made a stunning impression by taking two wickets with his first over and another with his fourth, en route to a triple-wicket maiden.

He would add four more scalpets to his tally, surpassing Rabada and West Indian paceman Fidel Edwards as the only players to take six wickets on his ODI debut as the visitors managed just 91 wickets in 21.4 overs.

Cassell’s figures are the seventh best in men’s ODI history, with Sri Lankan bowler Chaminda Vaas still leading with his eight for 19 against Zimbabwe in 2001.
