Schmiedlova beats Avanesyan to reach last four

Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova defeated Russia’s Elina Avanesyan 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the semi-finals of the Hungarian Open at the Római Tennis Academy.

Schmiedlova, ranked 79, will now play against Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Before her victory, the Slovakian defeated Russian Kamilla Rakhimova (3-6, 6-4, 6-0) and Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo, ranked No. 4 (2-6, 6-2, 6-2).

Avanesyan, ranked 75, defeated Poland’s Magdalena Frech, ranked No. 5 (7-6 (5), 6-4) and Spain’s Rebeka Masarova (2-6, 7-5, 6-1) in the previous rounds of the tournament in Budapest.
