Two legendary players whose careers have run parallel for twenty years are likely to get one last chance at international glory this summer.

As is the case with Lionel Messi playing for Argentina in the Copa America – which starts on Thursday – Cristiano Ronaldo will feature in what could be his last major international tournament.

Ronaldo’s Portugal open their UEFA Euro 2024 tournament on Tuesday by taking on the Czech Republic. Portugal are eight years removed from winning the European Championship (and doing so in an upset of hosts France in the final). 39-year-old Ronaldo – who will be competing in his sixth European Championship – is back for another quest for glory, despite facing questions over the viability of his national team after a much-publicized switch from top European football to Saudi football . Arab League.

When they take to the field against Turkey in Dortmund on Tuesday, Georgia will make its major international tournament debut, having previously never qualified for the World Cup or European Championship. Georgia won’t be a pushover, however, as it has one of the most intriguing players in the entire tournament: winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who plays club football for Italian side Napoli and is nicknamed “Kvaradona” after club legend Diego Maradona. Turkey, meanwhile, is aiming to improve on its performance in the last two Euros, when it failed to progress past the group stage. Turkey has achieved some success in international football, having reached the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2008 and finishing in third place at the 2002 World Cup.
