The Americans will first face Serbia and three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic in Lille. The Americans used a great second half to defeat Serbia, winning 105-79 in an exhibition game on July 17 in Abu Dhabi. Besides Jokic, Serbia is led by Hawks guard Bogdan Bogdanovic. They have the fourth-best odds (+1600) to win gold.

Wednesday, July 31: US 103, South Sudan 86

South Sudan nearly completed a stunning upset of Team USA in an exhibition game in London, losing 101-100. South Sudan led by as many as 16 points before James converted a layup with eight seconds left for a one-point lead. South Sudan, making its first Olympic appearance, are led by Carlik Jones, the 2022-23 G-League Player of the Year, and former five-star recruit Wenyen Gabriel, who played at Wilbraham and Monson Academy in Massachusetts.

Saturday, August 3: US 104, Puerto Rico 83

Team USA closes out the group stage with a matchup against huge underdog Puerto Rico. Earlier in July, Puerto Rico defeated Mexico and Lithuania to qualify for Paris. New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado is the only current NBA player on Puerto Rico’s roster, but Celtics draft pick Tremont Waters plays for his mother’s country.

Olympic Games: History of US Men’s Basketball

Men’s basketball was introduced at the Olympic Games in 1904 in St. Louis and became a medal event at the 1936 Games. Team USA has dominated, winning 16 gold medals in 19 appearances. The Americans have earned a medal at every Olympic Games.

Below is how the team has performed over the last five games:

2004 Athens: Bronze

A young team led by James, Dwayne Wade and Carmelo Anthony became the first American team made up of NBA players not to win gold. The Americans lost to Argentina in the semifinals before beating Lithuania in the bronze medal game.

2008 Beijing: Gold

After the disappointment of 2004, James, Wade and Kobe Bryant combined to take gold by beating the impressive Spanish team led by Pau and Marc Gasol 118-107.

2012 London: Gold

Team USA defeated Spain again 107-100 to win the gold medal. Kevin Durant scored a game-high 30 points.

2016 Rio: Gold

After a series of narrow victories in the group stage, the Americans, led by Durant and Anthony, went all out in the knockout stage, beating Serbia by 30 points to win their third straight gold medal.

2020 Tokyo: Gold

With newcomers Jayson Tatum and Devin Booker on the team, Team USA won its fourth consecutive gold against France, despite losing to France in the group stage.
