San Antonio Spurs sign rookie to two-way contract

Earlier in the offseason, the San Antonio Spurs signed guards David Duke Jr. and Jamaree Bouyea to a pair of two-way contracts. With these moves, the Spurs were left with one final two-way roster spot open. Now, it has been reported that the Spurs have filled that final spot. According to the team’s X account, the Spurs have signed rookie small forward Harrison Ingram to their final two-way contract.

The Spurs drafted Ingram with the 48th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. A native of Texas, Ingram spent his college career at Stanford and North Carolina before declaring for the draft. Last season, Ingram was named to the All-ACC Third Team.

Ingram played with the Spurs’ Summer League team this year. In seven total games during the Las Vegas and California showcases, Ingram averaged 10 points, 6.57 rebounds and 1.43 assists per game while shooting 38.2% from the field and 40.6% from beyond the arc.

Spurs’ busy off-season this summer

After finishing 22-60 last season, the Spurs missed the playoffs for the fifth straight season. They also haven’t had a winning record since 2019. However, it appears the tables are turning for the Spurs. Despite their poor record last season, there was a lot to be excited about in San Antonio. Specifically, it was an exciting time to watch rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama take the league by storm. Last year’s No. 1 overall draft pick lived up to his lofty expectations. In his first year in the league, the Frenchman won the Rookie of the Year award and finished runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year. Now, it appears the Spurs are looking to make a run and return to the playoffs as soon as possible.

This summer, the Spurs made a number of moves to help Wembanyama. San Antonio’s included signings of legendary point guard Chris Paul and former NBA champion Harrison Barnes. Additionally, the Spurs drafted guard Stephon Castle with the No. 4 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. It’s unlikely that the Spurs will make the playoffs again next season, especially considering how good the Western Conference is. However, the Spurs have at least climbed from the bottom of the West to a mid-table position in the conference. While a playoff appearance is unlikely, it wouldn’t be a complete surprise to see the team make such a leap next season.

The Last Word on Harrison Ingram

With a two-way contract, Ingram is unlikely to get much playing time with the main team. However, it is clear that the Spurs consider him good enough to sign him to a contract. The forward will likely spend most of his playing time with the Austin Spurs, their G League affiliate. There, Ingram should be able to showcase his skills and develop into a potential role player for the future.
