What you need to know

  • According to a report, Samsung has added a “double-folding phone” to its development plans, which can be folded “inwards” for durability.

  • The phone is speculated to launch with a 9- to 10-inch screen when unfolded, similar to Huawei’s Mate XT.

  • A report from September claimed that Samsung was moving towards its rollable phone concept shown at CES 2024.

Rumors of a triple or “double folding” Galaxy device return as a report claims Samsung is reconsidering such a device.

A report from ETNews claims that Samsung “recently added a double-folding phone to its development lineup” (via Android Authority). Huawei’s release of the Mate XT is likely to be a strong catalyst for Samsung, which is looking to introduce a similar device. The publication’s report states that the Korean OEM version could fold “inward.”

An alleged insider claims this was done to improve durability, as folding it outwards would make the phone “vulnerable to drops and bumps”.

Rumors claim that this double-folding device could offer a screen size of 9 to 10 inches when fully opened. Presumably, when the device is collapsed, it will remain comparable in size to a “regular” flat phone. This seems plausible since the Galaxy Z Fold 6 looks like a regular smartphone when closed, but fully unfolding it gives it more of a tablet look.

With this report, the publication’s source claims that Samsung’s partners “have also started development projects.” Furthermore, the company is rumored to have finalized the “release model” by the end of November.

The post states that Samsung could introduce this bifold/multifold device in 2025. The company could reportedly launch this phone alongside the annual launch of the Flip and Fold series.

This report goes against the rumors that Samsung has been following after the launch of the Mate XT. In September, rumors claimed that the Korean OEM was moving away from a dual-hinged device in favor of the rollable concept presented earlier. The company had filed patents for a triple device in South Korea and the US, but the device never came to fruition.

Speculation suggested that the device could come with a 12.4-inch display when it is fully rolled out. It was also rumored to have an under-display selfie camera.

The report also highlighted Samsung’s dissatisfaction with its recent Flip 6 and Fold 6 devices. Those phones didn’t live up to expectations, which likely prompted the company to look for other avenues.

Since the rumors go back to previous reports, it’s best to take this speculation with a grain of salt.
