Ryan McMahon could become an All-Star

Unsurprisingly, the Colorado Rockies are in the running for the 2025 first overall pick. There haven’t been many bright spots for this Rockies team this season. The team has an abundance of young talent, but it will take some time before Colorado is a postseason contender again. With 27 wins on the season by the end of June, the Rockies don’t have much to look forward to other than some of their guys making the 2024 National League all-star team. If these Colorado players make the all-star game, this will certainly boost the franchise’s confidence. Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon is about to make his first all-star appearance. McMahon has led the team and was by far the best Rockies hitter this regular season. He leads in multiple statistical categories and has the potential to reach some career highs.

Rockies third baseman on the cusp of his first All-Star appearance

Colorado’s 29-year-old third baseman was at the top of his game through 77 regular-season games. Through 292 plate appearances, McMahon has recorded a stolen base, 82 hits, 14 home runs and 42 runs batted in. He is currently hitting .281/.327/.483. His best game of the season so far came on April 12. During a 12-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, McMahon went four for six with three doubles and two runs batted in.

He has all the right numbers to earn an All-Star spot. If the Rockies third baseman becomes an All-Star for the first time, expect McMahon’s confidence and play to skyrocket. The 29-year-old is 53 hits shy of eclipsing his career-high of 134 from 2021. He needs 11 home runs and 44 runs driven to pass his career-high. His .281 batting average this season is a career-high. Hopefully, he can continue his success. McMahon has been holding this team back since the beginning of the season. Things can only get worse if he doesn’t get voted into an All-Star.

What if McMahon doesn’t make the All-Star team?

This season, McMahon and several other Rockies have struck out more than the MLB average. In 292 at bats, the 29-year-old struckout 92 times. He has a strikeout rate of 42 percent against a curveball, 33 against a fastball and 31 against a slider. Although he has a .250 batting average against eight pitches he has faced this season, he needs to reduce his chances of striking out. It’s a crucial part of his game that he needs to work on.

If McMahon doesn’t become a National League all-star in 2024, the Rockies season could plummet to a new low, one that this franchise has yet to experience in its 31 years of existence. McMahon’s confidence and play could be a bit shaky, and the team’s offensive unit could collapse if the Rockies’ third baseman can’t perform like he has. Currently, Colorado has 27 wins to its name. At the all-star break, the Rockies had 34 wins. If the team can’t come close to that 34-win total by the all-star break, we might see the Rockies have something in common with a group of flawed teams that have placed themselves on the wrong side of the MLB history books.
