Russian wrestler Shamil Mamedov withdraws from Paris Olympics

Shamil Mamedov, the only Russian wrestler invited to the Paris Olympics, has withdrawn due to a recurring injury, Tass news agency reported Saturday via the national wrestling federation. His decision has been communicated to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Earlier this week, the national association announced that 23-year-old Mamedov, who won a bronze medal at the 2023 world championships, can decide for himself whether he wants to participate.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russian and Belarusian athletes have been allowed to compete in Paris as strictly neutral athletes, with no flags or anthems, with additional IOC checks to ensure there are no military ties. Initially, 36 Russians were cleared to compete; however, 20 have since declined, calling the conditions humiliating.
