Russia launches the biggest airstrike on Ukraine in months, targeting the electricity grid

Russia launched a massive airstrike on Ukraine on Sunday, firing 120 missiles and 90 drones, killing at least seven people and causing widespread power outages. The strikes, the largest in almost three months, have severely damaged Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, raising fears of long winter power outages.

Explosions rocked Kiev as air defenses intercepted drones overhead. Critical infrastructure in regions from Lviv to Zaporizhia was affected, while emergency power cuts were imposed in areas such as Odessa. The Ukrainian air force claimed to have shot down most of the incoming missiles and drones. Officials called for additional air defense systems and warned that Moscow’s attacks underscore the need for stronger Western support.

The attacks come amid Ukraine’s nervousness about possible Western diplomatic shifts, while newly elected President Donald Trump signals his focus on ending the war, without detailing how. NATO allies Poland and Moldova reported airspace violations, further fueling regional tensions.
