According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, rival teams believe Russell Wilson’s age could pose a problem for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2024 season.

Howe said opponents are concerned that Wilson is “too far past his prime to be a difference-maker” for the Steelers’ offense.

After averaging the eighth-fewest passing yards per game in 2023, Pittsburgh completely overhauled its quarterback room this offseason. Former starter Kenny Pickett was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, while backup Mitch Trubisky was cut. Backup passer Mason Rudolph also left in free agency.

The Steelers acquired Wilson after he was fired by the Denver Broncos and acquired Justin Fields in a deal with the Chicago Bears.

The nine-time Pro Bowl passer finished an impressive 2023 season, completing 66.4 percent of his throws for 3,070 yards and 26 touchdowns, compared to eight interceptions.

It’s fair to wonder if he’ll continue to operate at the same level with Pittsburgh, considering he’ll be 36 at the end of the regular season. Wilson also has a tendency to hang in the pocket and collect sacks, having been taken down 90 times over the past two seasons. He’s had three sacks in two preseason appearances with the Steelers.

Still, Pittsburgh should be able to stay in the AFC playoff picture with a defense that features stars like TJ Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick. Meanwhile, the Steelers’ ceiling in 2024 will be determined by the effectiveness of the veteran quarterback under center.
