Royal Troon cottage for sale in shocking surprise

A house in the middle of the Royal Troon Golf Club, home to the 152nd Open Championship, has been put up for sale for a price of £1.5 million.

A house in the middle of the Royal Troon Golf Club, home to the 152nd Open Championship, has been put up for sale for a price of £1.5 million.

The branding of estate agency Strutt & Parker can be seen on a ‘For Sale’ sign outside one of the two cottages at Blackrock House, which was built before Royal Troon existed.

The cottage is located right in the middle of Royal Troon in Ayrshire, Scotland, and borders the 16th hole – a par 5, 572 yard challenge called “Well”. The second green is on the west side.

The house is a four bedroom semi-detached property and could easily set you back a seven figure sum.

Like nothing else in the world

Annabel Blackett, associate at Strutt & Parker, said: “The sale of Blackrock House is one of those rare moments when you can safely say there is nothing like it anywhere else in the world.

“The house was built before the Royal Troon Golf Club even existed. The driveway to the house winds through the course and takes you to an almost different world – a world that must surely feel like a dream to any golfer!

“From here you can watch five holes from the comfort of your own home, and of course you also have the club around the corner to play yourself.

“While the views are fantastic all year round – especially with the coastal waters in the distance – the location really comes into its own when there is such a prestigious championship as The Open in town.

“This week marks the 10th anniversary of The Open at Royal Troon, meaning you can watch Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson tee off from different rooms in the house – a claim you couldn’t make anywhere else in the world!”

“The property is now divided into two homes and our clients have owned Blackrock House for 30 years, so this sale presents a rare opportunity for someone to own a piece of one of the country’s most famous links courses.

“It’s no surprise that the launch of such a special house has generated as much excitement and interest as we’ve seen so far.”

About hole no. 16, the Open says: “The first real break of the last nine holes comes on the 16th hole with Well.

“This is the first par-5 since the 6th hole. This hole provides much-needed relief for players struggling to save par and offers a very good chance of birdie despite playing mostly into the wind.

“But even the 16th doesn’t give free handouts, as a perfectly placed burn cutting down the middle of the fairway can often take the driver out of the hands of all but the longest hitters. That leaves a very long second shot that can put the green out of reach.

“A cross bunker means that a hit-and-hope strategy is also likely to fail, leaving most players with a shot of between 80 and 100 yards to possibly the most heavily wooded green on the course. A birdie opportunity, for sure, but you’ll have to work for it.”
