Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane called Dan Burn’s own goal against Tottenham “comic”.

Newcastle continued their good start to the season with a 2-1 victory over Ange Postecoglou’s men at St James’ Park.

However, Burn was unlucky when he found the roof of his own net in the 56th minute after Harvey Barnes had opened the scoring.

Fortunately for the defender, Alexander Isak scored the winning goal with 12 minutes left on the clock, saving him from embarrassment.

However, Keane was critical of Burn, telling Sky Sports: ‘It was almost comical really. He’s got time to clean it up.’

Fans also criticised the own goal on social media, with one saying: ‘One of the most messy goals I’ve ever seen, fair play.’

A second posted: ‘The problem with men’s football is that it’s hard to take defending and goalkeeping seriously isn’t it? Great finish from Dan Burn, btw.’

‘Absolutely pathetic. You expect that kind of goalkeeping and cleaning up at Sunday league level,’ said another.

Meanwhile, other fans were raving about Burns’ overall performance against Spurs.

“I thought Dan Burn played brilliantly today, apart from his own goal of course. Against a very fast Spurs attacking line he did a great job,” said a fourth on X.

The victory over Postecoglou’s men ensured that Newcastle could secure their seventh point from nine ahead of the upcoming international break.
