At least 10 people were killed and several others, including children, were injured in a rocket attack on a football field in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights on Saturday.

The attack came hours after an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon killed three members of the militant Hezbollah group.

The attack on the football field, the deadliest attack on an Israeli target since hostilities between the two foes flared up in October, has raised fears of a wider conflict in the region.

Hezbollah said it attacked a military base in the Golan Heights in retaliation for Israeli attacks on a village in Lebanon. However, Hezbollah’s chief spokesman, Mohammed Afif, told The Associated Press that the group “categorically denies carrying out an attack on Majdal Shams.”

The Israeli military claimed in a statement on Saturday that “the rocket launch towards Majdal Shams was carried out by the terrorist organization Hezbollah,” based on intelligence it had.

“The terrorist organization Hezbollah is behind the rocket launch at a football field in Majdal Shams, which killed several civilians, including children, earlier this evening,” the statement said.
