Rio Ferdinand warns Manchester United against signing 20-goal striker

Manchester United have been warned against a bid for Brentford star Ivan Toney, despite previous speculation of a move to several top Premier League clubs.

The England international was expected to become one of the most sought-after attackers this summer, but so far no major club, including United, has actually signed him.

Toney has been closely linked with several top clubs, including Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

However, Tottenham opted to sign Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth, while Arsenal and Chelsea have yet to make a move for him. The lack of action has led to questions over Toney’s suitability for these top teams.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has expressed concerns over Toney’s fitness at Old Trafford.

Ferdinand expressed doubts whether the 28-year-old striker fits in with United’s current strategy and long-term goals.

He said (via Daily Mail):

“Personally I wouldn’t go for someone like Ivan Toney. I think the age, that profile doesn’t fit the club.

“I just don’t see it as a match. I thought it was a bit strange. He was someone that everyone was talking about that he could go to Arsenal or Chelsea for £100m, £80m or whatever, but suddenly there are no bidders. I don’t understand why that is, for Man United I just don’t see it as a match.”

Toney had an excellent 2022-23 Premier League season, finishing as the league’s third-best scorer with 20 goals in 33 games, behind only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

Manchester United have already bolstered their attack this summer by signing Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee, complementing their existing talent such as Rasmus Hojlund. However, a recent report suggests they could sign another attacker before the end of the transfer window.
