As GamesRadar reports, in the season finale, viewers will finally learn who The Stranger actually is – and it’s someone fans had theorized. In the episode, The Stranger meets Tom Bombadil in his hut, where Bombadil tells him, “A wizard doesn’t find his staff, he finds it, like his name.” The Stranger replies, “Gandalf, that’s what they’re going to call me, aren’t they?”

And that’s that. After years of fan theories and speculation pointing to The Stranger being Gandalf, it has finally been confirmed, and it will be interesting to see where the show goes from here.

Not all Tolkien fans were thrilled with the reveal, pointing out that Gandalf didn’t come to Middle-earth until the Third Age; the TV show, meanwhile, is set in the Second Age.

The Rings of Power has not yet been officially renewed for season 3, but it is expected to do so even if the show’s ratings decline. The showrunners have five seasons planned out, right down to the final shot.

In other Gandalf news, Ian McKellen has said he is interested in playing the wise wizard again in the next Lord of the Rings films. No official casting announcements have been made, but McKellen recently said, “I don’t like the idea of anyone else playing Gandalf.”

The Hunt for Gollum may still be a while away, but the next Lord of the Rings film, The War of the Rohirrim, hits theaters in December. The animated film tells the story of Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox) and Princess Hera (Gaia Wise).
