A wall of mud and debris buried a family of five in Gamagori, Aichi Prefecture, at around 10:00 p.m. local time (13:00 GMT) on Tuesday (August 27). One person was seriously injured and three others are still missing.

According to public broadcaster NHK, about 138.5 millimeters (5.5 inches) of rain had fallen as of 11 p.m. local time on Tuesday (1400 GMT) since the rains began on Monday afternoon (August 26), more than the average rainfall for August.

Currently, rescue work is being carried out by the Japanese Ground Defense Force to locate the other three family members.
