Remco Evenepoel: They both played in a different division

Despite losing a few seconds, Remco Evenepoel retained his second place in the general classification of the Tour de France after stage 11.

“It was impossible to follow Tadej Pogacar when he attacked,” Evenepoel said after the stage. “I was on the limit and there was still too much distance to go to put myself in the red. At the same time, he took a lead of 40” and that was not two or three minutes. In the end, Jonas was the smartest and he was very strong. They were both in a different division.”

“I got to Primoz Roglic and we worked to fill in, I think I had more leeway than him. Then we went through a very slippery corner and he fell, so I went for 3rd place in the stage. In the end I did well, I rode at my own pace and I think it was the right decision”.

“Now I’ve widened the gap to everyone behind Primoz, so I’m well positioned to stay on the podium, which is good for my first Tour. I just need to keep the confidence and be there from Saturday. In the Pyrenees and the Alps we’ll have longer, less explosive climbs than today. Maybe this suits me better and I can try something. In any case, I’m going to fight.”
