Reef x Heads Above The Waves Blue Health Campaign – Wavelength Surf Magazine

This summer, REEF UK has partnered with UK mental health charity, Heads Above The Waves, to raise awareness of the positive effects that spending time in or around water has on mental wellbeing. With scientific evidence that exposure to water has beneficial effects on mental wellbeing, the ‘blue health’ campaign will encourage people to take the plunge and experience the benefits for themselves.

The collaboration will see a limited edition t-shirt and bag available to purchase from 19th July, with 50% of profits donated directly to Heads Above The Waves to support their ongoing work with young people in the UK. So you can be confident that your money is going to a good cause.

There is also the opportunity to nominate someone to win a free surf lesson with REEF ambassadors Mike Lay and Evie Johnstone at The Wave in Bristol on August 7. The event aims to lower the barriers for people who need a mental boost and want to try surfing for the first time.

“I’m thrilled to be involved in this campaign and can’t wait for the competition winners to experience the power of surfing for the first time. Growing up so close to the ocean, surfing most days and working on the beach, the benefits of being near the water are something that can easily be taken for granted. But it’s important to raise awareness of the positive impact it has on people’s wellbeing so they can give it a try for themselves,” says Mike.

The campaign will also feature a group of ocean ambassadors, including surf photographer Bella Rose Bunce, ocean artist Jasmine Hortop, filmmaker Katy Fraser and cold water swimming group Dawnstalkers, who will share their ideas on how they use the water to improve their mental wellbeing.

Si Martin, Founder of Heads Above The Waves, said: “We’re excited to be partnering with REEF on this campaign! We’re helping people find ways to cope on the bad days, and so many people have found that blue spaces have a hugely positive impact on their mental health. Our ethos from day one has been ‘if it worked for someone else, it can work for you’, so it’s super important to encourage people to experience these benefits and reap the rewards first hand.”

The campaign launched on July 15th, with the competition closing on July 28th. Limited edition t-shirts and tote bags go on sale on Friday July 19th and will be available from Reef UK, Heads Above The Waves and 10Over Surf Shop in Cornwall, so make sure you grab one before they sell out.
