Red Wings prospect named MSU captain

This morning, the Michigan State hockey team announced its leadership for the upcoming season. Red Savage, the Red Wings’ fourth-round pick in 2021, is expected to take the ‘C’ role as captain of the Spartans.

Savage played the first two seasons of his NCAA career at Miami (Ohio) before transferring to MSU for his junior campaign. During that time, he scored 10 goals and added 17 assists in 38 games as the Spartans won the regular season and Big Ten tournament championships.

“It’s been a lot of fun so far,” Savage said in February of life in East Lansing. “It’s obviously a big change for me coming to the Big Ten and playing at such a big school and the history behind the school and everything. It’s been a lot of fun. We have a really talented team and a really hard-working team. It makes it a lot easier to come to the rink every day, especially when we’re stringing together wins like we’ve been doing.”

It’s clear that Savage is not only having fun, but is also making a positive impact on the MSU locker room as he’s already left his mark on coach Adam Nightingale after just one season.

As an NHL prospect, Savage’s ceiling isn’t exactly unlimited, but he’s a smart, responsible player who can play well in any situation. His 27 points were nearly double his sophomore production with Miami (14 points), so perhaps that offense can continue to grow as the Spartans look to continue their B1G success and translate it to the NCAA Tournament. If that’s going to work, Savage — and fellow Red Wing draft pick Trey Augustine — will have to help steer the ship.
