Red, White & Royal Blue sequel gets major update

Attention Red, White and Royal Blue fans! A huge new update for the long-awaited sequel has arrived.

In a recent interview with VarietyArrow Creator Greg Berlanti was asked about the status of the sequel, which officially confirmed earlier this year.

While he didn’t say anything about the plot of the upcoming film, he confirmed that director Matthew López and author Casey McQuiston – who wrote the original novel – were nearly finished with the script.

“What’s so great is that it feels like the natural next step in these characters’ journeys,” he added.

The Red, White and Royal Blue film first caught the attention of LGBTQIA+ fans in August 2023, when it was released on Prime Video.

Starring Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex Claremont-Diaz and Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Henry, the film follows the passionate romance between the charismatic son of America’s first female president (Uma Thurman) and a handsome British prince.

The film also stars Clifton Collins Jr., Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, Stephen Fry, Ellie Bamber, Thomas Flynn, Malcolm Atobrah, Akshay Khanna, Sharon D Clarke, Aneesh Sheth and Juan Castano.

Upon its release, the romantic comedy was widely praised for its faithfulness to the source material and the electric chemistry between Zakhar-Perez and Galitzine.

In addition to rave reviews, Red, White and Royal Blue received numerous award nominations, including a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie.

In May, after months of fan outcry and speculation, Prime Video, López and McQuiston announced that a sequel was on the way.

“Yes, there will be a sequel,” the American playwright exclaimed during a fan screening.

The along for the ride author added: “Matthew and I are writing it together. That’s all we can say.”

During a panel discussion in August for Deadline’s TV Contenders: The NomineesLópez provided insight into his and McQuiston’s creative process.

“When we started this process, I kept saying that we have to make this film adaptation work… if you feel the same way at the end as you did when you finished the book,” he said.

“There is no book to guide us, but what we do have are Casey’s original thoughts and ideas.”

In the same interview, Perez expressed his enthusiasm for the film and the fact that he was stepping back into the shoes of First son Alex.

“He just has this endless waterfall of optimism that just flows over him all the time, and he’s just relentlessly positive,” he raved.

“So I think I’m excited to bring that back to the screen. And I think (with the) state of the world right now, we could use a little more of that.”
