The Los Angeles Rams are again without a wide receiver.

Head coach Sean McVay told reporters Monday that star forward Cooper Kupp is expected to miss “an extended period of time” and may be placed on the injured list due to an ankle injury.

The Rams are already without teammate Puka Nacua, who is on the injured list with a PCL injury.

Kupp injured his ankle in the second quarter and did not play in the second half of his team’s 41-10 blowout loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The injury appeared to have occurred during a 24-yard reception, his fourth of the game. He was seen in a running boot after the game.

“(Kupp) ran the field, did a really good job, and then he limped a little bit,” quarterback Matthew Stafford told reporters Sunday. “And he doesn’t usually limp for long. Sometimes you get trampled and you limp for a minute and then you walk away for one. But we’ll see what that is. It’s obviously a big part of our team and a big part of our offense.”

It’s been a tough start to the season for the Rams, who are now plagued by injuries:

The Rams have been without these starters for several weeks now:
WR Cooper Kupp
WR Puka Nacua
CB Darious Williams
LG/C Jonah Jackson
LG/C Steve Avila
Reserve swing tackle Joe Noteboom
S. John Johnson III
RG Kevin Dotson plays despite foot injury.

Meanwhile, the receiver room has been reduced to Demarcus Robinson, Tyler Johnson, Tutu Atwell and rookie Jordan Whittington. That’s a big demotion for Stafford, who started the season with one of the best receiver duos in football in Kupp and Nacua.

Injuries have been a recurring problem for Kupp, as he missed 15 games between the 2022-23 seasons. That followed a legendary 2021 campaign in which he led the NFL in catches (145), receiving yards (1,947) and receiving touchdowns (16) in what was one of the best seasons for a wideout in NFL history.

That year, he was named a Pro Bowler, a first-team All-Pro selection and the Offensive Player of the Year. It seemed like he was well on his way to superstardom as the game’s best wideout, but injuries have kept him from taking on that mantle.

This year, he leads the NFL in receptions (18) despite playing just six quarters, a sign that he was only just coming off another banner year before injury struck again. And now the Rams, 0-2 to start the year, must find a way to generate offense without their two best weapons in the passing game.
