Rain coming, temperatures dropping

The summer heat wave is finally over and we are heading into an active period in Texas. We are not talking hurricanes, derechos or sarnados, but there is at least a week of daily thunderstorms. Hopefully and probably most of Texas will get at least some rain this coming week. Some lucky ones will get a bucket full of it!

The best chance for scattered thunderstorms today is across southeastern Texas. We’ve already had a few storms this morning across the Hill Country and southeast Texas. We’ll see a continuation of that this afternoon as more activity develops. Tonight and Wednesday will be similar, although tomorrow the activity may be a bit more scattered, and we’ll try to push further north into North Texas. Isolated storms are also possible across the western third of Texas this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon. Locally heavy rain is possible with storms this week, but they’ll be patchy.

Chance of rain increases later this week

The coming week will see scattered showers and storms across Texas on a daily basis. Starting Thursday through the weekend, we’ll see rain chances increase across the northwestern half of Texas and the southeastern half of the state, which has been given a head start. It won’t rain every day in every location, but weather radars will be getting a workout after a mostly dry August. Depending on which weather model solution you prefer, we could continue the wet weather well into next week or head back toward a late summer look.

Most of Texas is forecast to receive at least a trace amount of rain over the next five to seven days. Through Sunday, the Coastal Plains and Southeast Texas have the best chance of receiving several inches of rain. However, isolated areas of West Texas, the Permian Basin, and the Hill Country could also receive heavy rain.

I don’t think summer is over, but I hope we’re past the worst. Either way, temperatures will be dropping over the next few days with the chance of rain and remaining cloud cover. Even if you end up in the upper 80s or 90s by the afternoon, you could get a natural cool down from Mother Nature thanks to one of the pop-up thunderstorms!

No widespread severe thunderstorms are expected. Our upcoming weather period is not favorable for large hailstorms, long-lived windmakers or spinny-spinny doom-doom problems. Never say never, because that’s a good way to get an ‘oopsie’. However, we are looking forward to the upcoming less warm period of weather!
