Rafael Leao hits back at Paolo Di Canio with simple yet brutal social media post

AC Milan star Rafael Leao has hit out at Paolo Di Canio after the pundit criticised his recent performances, posting a photo of the moment Di Canio gave the fascist salute during his time as a Lazio player.

Leao has been a star player for Milan in recent years, but Di Canio came in for fierce criticism after the Rossoneri’s 2-2 draw with Lazio last weekend.

The Portuguese international did score in that match, but overall he was perhaps not at his best. It seems he was not in the mood to accept criticism from a controversial figure like Di Canio…

Di Canio was a great player for much of his career, shining at Lazio but also playing in England with Sheffield Wednesday, West Ham and Charlton Athletic. But now he is often remembered for this moment pictured above.

The former Italian striker has given mixed reactions and explanations since the incident, after initially defending his fascist views by saying: “I will always salute as I did, because it gives me a feeling of belonging to my people… I saluted my people with what for me is a sign of belonging to a group that adheres to true values, values of civility in the face of the standardisation that this society imposes on us.”

Di Canio later said he regretted it and insisted he was not a racist. He was suspended for one match and fined €7,000 for the incident.

Leao is clearly not a fan of him, and it is clear that this image will always haunt Di Canio. He should have known better than to behave in such an inflammatory and insulting manner.

It will be interesting to see if the feud between the two continues in the coming days and weeks.
