Puerto Rico basketball qualifies for 2024 Paris Olympics

Former Colorado State basketball player Gian Clavell is leaving for Paris.

Clavell and the Puerto Rico national team defeated Lithuania 79-68 in the qualifying match for the overall title on Sunday, securing a spot at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Clavell scored five points (2-5 shooting) in nearly 12 minutes off the bench.

It is the first time since 2004 that Puerto Rico has qualified for the Olympic Games in men’s basketball.

Clavell and Puerto Rico will play against the United States, Serbia and South Sudan in the group stage of the Olympic Games.

Clavell, a sharp-shooting 6-foot-4 guard, played at CSU from 2014-17. He averaged more than 20 points per game in his final two seasons as a Ram and made 149 career 3-pointers at CSU. Clavell was an honorable mention All-American in 2017 when he was named Mountain West Player of the Year.

Clavell, 30, played seven games in the NBA for Dallas in 2017 and has played professionally in leagues around the world since leaving CSU. He currently plays for a club (Prometey) in Ukraine.
