Proteas put in 23.3 million rand for ‘silver’ T20 World Cup

The Proteas will share $1.28 million (R23.3 million) to finish second this year T20 World Cup.

Aiden Markram’s men came up agonisingly short by seven runs in Saturday’s final India in Barbados, where they failed to win their first major title since the 2013 Champions Trophy.

As the winner, India will receive the lion’s share of the record prize pool $11.25 million for the tournament.

Their share of that will be $2.45 million – along with bonuses – which the International Cricket Council (ICC) said was “the largest amount in the tournament’s history”.

South Africa will share $1.28 million (€23.3 million) for taking second place.

That money will be divided among approximately 25 people – the entire team including coaches and support staff.

If it is divided equally, that works out approximately $51,200 (€932,000) each.

India the BIG winners

In the meantime, India’s The cricket team that won the T20 World Cup received prize money of almost $15 million (R270 million) by the country’s national cricket council, the BCCI, on Sunday, as a reward for their “talent, determination and sportsmanship”.

“I am pleased to announce a prize money of Rs 125 crore ($14.9 million) for Team India for winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024,” Jay Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said in a statement.

“The team showed exceptional talent, determination and sportsmanship throughout the tournament,” Shah added.

“Congratulations to all the players, coaches and support staff for this great achievement.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on social media on Sunday that he had spoken to the team and congratulated them on their “excellent skills and spirit”.
