Prince Edward teams play for state championship tonight

Published 11:12 AM Monday, July 8, 2024

Two teams from Prince Edward County will battle it out for state titles tonight as both the Baseball Majors All-Stars and the Softball Debs All-Stars advance to their respective finals.

For the Debs, this tournament has been a blast of offense. They’re undefeated and averaging 13 runs per game. And that total probably would have been higher, but for one of the victories that came by forfeit, when Powhatan attempted an illegal substitution. It started on Friday, when Prince Edward defeated Dinwiddie 15-2. The next morning, the Debs played tournament host Amherst and won there as well, 14-5. The final game of the evening on Saturday ended in a forfeit, sending Prince Edward to Sunday’s semifinal against Halifax. The Debs took care of business there as well, winning 11-9.

So now it comes down to this, because the Debs go to Madison Heights tonight at 6:00 PM to take on Powhatan once again for the state title. If the Debs win, they are the state champions. If Prince Edward loses, the two teams will turn around and play late into the night, with the winner of that second game winning the title.

Prince Edward Majors ready for battle

The Majors have a similar story to tell after this weekend. Undefeated in the Virginia Dixie Youth Baseball Division 2 State Tournament, they defeated Buckingham 7-1 in six innings on Friday. Then they turned around and hammered Dinwiddie American 15-5 in five innings the next day. That gave the Majors a bye on Sunday as they advanced to the state championship.

To win that title, they will face Dinwiddie American for the second time tonight, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in Dinwiddie. If Prince Edward wins that game, they will be the Division 2 state champions. If they lose, the two teams will play one more time.
