Presidents Cup 2024: Fourball Matches on Day 1 at Royal Montreal

The 15th edition of the Presidents Cup begins Thursday at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Canada.

The U.S. and International teams open with five fourball (better ball) matches. Matchups will be announced Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on Golf Channel.

Unlike the Ryder Cup, which uses a blind draw to determine the lineups, the Presidents Cup uses a ‘snake system’ to determine who plays whom.

The captain of the reigning champion (USA) decides who will announce their pairing first in Match 1. For example, if US captain Jim Furyk decides to go first, he will reveal his opening partnership. International captain Mike Weir will then counter. Weir will then announce first in Match 2 and the process will repeat accordingly.

After Thursday’s match, the teams compete in five foursomes (alternate shot) on Friday and then four fourballs and four foursomes in a doubles session on Saturday. Sunday features 12 singles. The first team to reach 15 1/2 points wins the competition. If there is a 15-15 tie, the teams share the cup.
