Predictions for today’s game between Michigan football and Arkansas State

Michigan’s football team will get its first chance to bounce back from last week’s crushing loss to Texas when Arkansas State, led by former CMU coach Butch Jones, visits the Big House on Saturday afternoon.

Five Free Press sports reporters make their choice between the Wolverines, who are favored by more than three touchdowns, and the Red Wolves.

Arkansas State is expected to compete for the Sun Belt this year and can throw the ball. Michigan will have the perfect opponent to improve its run game — the Red Wolves’ defense is ranked 114th in the country, allowing 199 yards per game. This is the week Michigan’s offense gets back to basics, with Kalel Mullings going over the 100-yard mark with two scores. The choice: UM 30, Arkansas State 7.

With a big new contract in hand, head coach Sherrone Moore will have to prove his worth with a resounding comeback game against the 2-0 Red Wolves. That shouldn’t be a problem, considering Arkansas State’s weak run defense. The Wolverines will have it so easy that they can start planning for USC at halftime. The choice: UM 38, Arkansas State 13.

Arkansas State’s unblemished record should probably be handed a loss after a controversial call went in their favor late in the season opener against Central Arkansas. This isn’t a great team, and it shouldn’t pose much of a threat to Michigan. But the Wolverines, with a flagging offense and subpar defense, are a bit of a mess right now.

Texas’s drubbing last weekend has taken away Michigan’s aura of invincibility, and it could take a while for the Wolverines to recover from the loss. As such, this game could be uncomfortably close in the early going before the reigning national champions assert their supremacy and pull away. The choice: UM 33, Arkansas State 14.

The Wolverines are going to win this game, I have no doubt about that. But I’m so curious to see how Michigan looks against a team like this. Because that puts the Texas debacle into perspective. Was Texas so dominant because it was on its way to a national championship game appearance? (Probably.) Or did Michigan look so bad because they lost so much talent? This game will give us a clue. The choice: UM 31 State Arkansas 10.

Hey, we have no idea who the Wolverines are. Is Fresno State really good? Will Texas win the national championship? I bet Michigan is somewhere between its first and second appearance. Although that could be a scary spot too. The choice: UM 27, Arkansas State 16.
