Power’s Open hopes for last chance in Scotland as Davis Thompson John Deere wins

Seamus Power never had the chance to qualify for next week’s Open Championship at the John Deere Classic, but he heads to Scotland in decent form after finishing the final round with a 65 for a tie for 17th place.

Power starts the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in his last chance to secure a ticket for Royal Troon and join Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Tom McKibbin, Pádraig Harrington and Liam Nolan.

The tournament, which is jointly organized with the PGA TOUR, is the 16th and final tournament in The Open Qualifying Series (OQS). So far, 41 players have registered for the final Major Championship of the year.

There are three places available for the top three players (who are not already exempt) who make the cut at the second Rolex Series event of the Race to Dubai 2024 this week.

The Open, the oldest golf tournament in the world, will be held this year from July 18 to 21.

Brian Harman will defend his Open Championship title in Ayrshire later this month, having claimed his first Major victory with the Claret Jug at Royal Liverpool last year.

American Davis Thompson will be there after claiming his first PGA Tour title at TPC Deere Run by four strokes at a tournament record 28-under-par after shooting a 64.

Thompson rarely looked in doubt after a brilliant start, birdieing five of his first six holes before birdieing the ninth hole for a score of 29.

Luke Clanton shot 63 to become the first amateur to finish in the top 10 on the PGA Tour for two consecutive weeks since 1958. He finished in a tie for second place with Michael Thorbjornsen (63) and Taiwan’s CT Pan (64), with the latter securing his spot in the Open.

“Qualifying for The Open was just an added incentive,” Thompson said.

“The goal was to win the golf tournament, after a great start and I was able to finish it.”
