Pots for 2024-25 Champions League draw determined according to new format

Thursday’s UEFA Champions League draw has been completed after the play-off round concluded on Wednesday.

It is the first time that a draw has been made according to the new format, with all 36 teams in one ranking.

The draw begins at 5pm UK/12pm ET, with the first matches scheduled for September 17-19. The league phase will run until January, with all 18 matches being played simultaneously on the final matchday.

Instead of placing teams in groups, the draw will create eight games for each club. There will be two games, one home and one away, against teams from each of the four pots.

Because teams now play matches against clubs from their own pot, there is no longer any advantage to be gained from Pot 1. In previous seasons, Pot 1 meant avoiding matches against the strongest clubs in the tournament.

Pot 1 previously contained the Champions League and Europa League title holders, plus the champions of the top six domestic leagues. Pots 2 through 4 would then be ranked by strength using the UEFA club coefficient, which ranks clubs based on their performance in Europe over the previous five seasons. Now, only the Champions League title holders will automatically be in Pot 1, with all other positions based on the UEFA club coefficient.

Clubs will be told on Thursday who their opponents are and which stadiums the matches will be played in, but the order of the matches will not be announced by UEFA until Saturday.

This season the final will be held on Saturday, May 31 at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
