Possibility of very wet days from next week

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – We’ve definitely had some heavy rain this week. Some days the totals were a little less, some days a little more, but the week was definitely typical of our rainy season. Today, as we wrap up the work week and head into a long weekend, it looks like the moisture available to produce rain in the atmosphere will be enough to support scattered storms near the coast again, but the coverage should be a little less than yesterday.

Due to a band of slightly drier air circling high pressure to our north, we will dry out just enough to reduce our chances of rain slightly compared to what we are likely to see this coming week. We can still expect afternoon thunderstorms today and tomorrow. That is good because it will cool things down during the period of maximum warming. It feels like temperatures will reach 106 to 110 over the next few days and cooling showers will help limit the number of hours for the high heat indexes.

On Sunday, humidity will begin to rise. And so will the chance of afternoon thunderstorms. On Monday or Tuesday, the moisture in the air will be very high and could support numerous thunderstorms that could sometimes produce heavy rain. It is too early to estimate the risk potential of the heavy rain, but it is something to keep an eye on over the weekend as confidence in the model results increases.

In the tropics, we are monitoring two systems in the mid-Atlantic. The National Hurricane Center gives one of the two a 50% chance of developing in 7 days, and the second a 20% chance of developing in 7 days. Both systems should be watched over the next few days, but neither system will impact the Suncoast this long weekend.
