Portland State cancels game due to whooping cough outbreak

Portland State has canceled its Week 3 meeting with South Dakota due to a whooping cough outbreak within the football program, the Vikings announced Saturday afternoon.

Portland State (0-2) was scheduled to host South Dakota (1-1) on Saturday after losses to Washington State and Weber State to open the 2024 season. A statement from the program said no players within the program are currently seriously ill.

Portland State is scheduled to visit Boise State in Week 4. The Broncos are off in Week 3, and the program released the following statement shortly after Portland State announced the cancellation on Saturday:

“We are aware of Portland State’s decision to cancel their game against South Dakota due to health and safety protocols,” the statement said. “We are in contact with Portland State administration and will continue to do so as we continue to monitor the situation regarding next Saturday’s game. Our highest priority and concern is the health and safety of everyone involved.”

South Dakota plays Drake at home next Saturday. Ticket sales and refund information for Saturday’s canceled game will be announced at a later date, Portland State said.
