Police find a woman’s body in a freezer during a welfare check in the East Valley

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) – Las Vegas police said they are investigating a suspicious death after a body was discovered in a freezer during a welfare check in the East Valley.

Metro said they found the body in the 5500 block of Tres Piedras Road after receiving a caller’s request for a welfare check around 11:41 a.m. Wednesday.

Initial details of the caller’s request indicate that the caller had noted that the 68-year-old woman who lived at the Tres Piedras residence – and who was regularly seen with her dog – had not been seen outside her home since late October .

The caller requested that authorities conduct a welfare check, and the caller said they also noticed suspicious activity at the residence.

Police said they responded to the scene and made contact with the caller. When they went to the house, no one answered the door. They decided they had enough information to go in and ensure the 68-year-old woman’s safety.

Police said they immediately encountered a man and a woman in the home who authorities were not looking for, and that they were acting suspiciously and could not tell where the 68-year-old woman belonging to the home was.

The home was then searched and police said they found a locked chest freezer.

Police said it is common during welfare checks to identify containers that match the size of the person they are looking for. So police said they called a locksmith to open the chest freezer, where they found the remains of the 68-year-old woman inside.

Detectives are now investigating this like a homicide, but said it is essentially a suspicious death investigation unless they can determine if another individual killed the 68-year-old woman. Based on the preliminary details of their investigation so far, police said they cannot consider this an official homicide.

Detectives say they are still determining the relationship between the 68-year-old woman and the two people found in the home, but it appears they may have been roommates. According to police, the two people are currently in custody.

Detectives also said this does not appear to be a random act.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the LVMPD Homicide Section or Crime Stoppers of Nevada.
