Mauricio Pochettino is one of the men being considered as a possible replacement for Gregg Berhalter as coach of the US national team.

The 51-year-old Berhalter was dropped from the team after the US was eliminated in the group stage of the Copa America.

US Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker is leading the search for a successor.

German club Hoffenheim released a statement on Tuesday from their manager, New Jersey-born Pellegrino Matarazzo, indicating that he has committed to the club, after widespread speculation that he was on the verge of being appointed.

Crocker played for Southampton for a time when Pochettino was in charge of St Mary’s.

The 52-year-old Argentine, along with others, are said to have spoken to US officials. Sources have said the idea of appointing the former Tottenham, Paris St-Germain and Chelsea manager has not been rejected, despite him demanding a high salary.

The United States will play a friendly match against Copa America semi-finalist Canada on September 7.

Canada coach and former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsh was also in talks about the US job before Berhalter was reappointed in June.

Following Berhalter’s firing, Marsh indicated he had “no interest” in the vacancy and would not have done so without a shift within US Soccer as an organization.
