PlayStation 5 Pro to be announced in a few weeks

If spotted by VGCa well-known and reliable leaker, billbil-kun at Dealabs Magazineclaims that insider information suggests the PS5 Pro will be announced soon.

While a PS5 Pro seems inevitable given Sony’s pattern with previous consoles, the Japanese console giant has yet to officially announce anything. PS5 Slim was unveiled last Octoberand was released in November 2023, with a slimmed-down version of the four-year-old console. Almost a year later, it would be a good time to announce a pre-Christmas launch of a souped-up version of the machine.

Rumors about the Pro have been circulating for a while, starting in late 2023 claiming it was developed as “Project Trinity,” and followed in March of this year with discussions about our own scaling upunder the awesome name PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. It was also claimed to be nearly three times as powerful as the Xbox Series X’s current 12 teraflops, with Sony acts quickly to remove videos containing such information.

According to billbil-kun, there are no big surprises when it comes to the machine’s name, with the leaker claiming it will simply be called the “PS5 Pro.” They also claim to have seen the console’s packaging, but in an effort to avoid copyright infringement, they’ve taken the unusual step of actually drawing the design themselves!

It looks like the design is very similar to the Slim, but with three black stripes on the sides of the front panels instead of the previous ones. Also, the device is, unsurprisingly, a bit thicker.

The packaging that is said to have been Dealabs showed a device without a disk drive, suggesting that this may be another standalone addition that could save costs for people who prefer to work digitally only.

The key information here is the claim that the announcement will happen in the coming weeks. This, again, is in line with Sony’s habits. While this would come a year later than the PS4 Pro announcement, which also arrived in September with a November release date, that extra time between the original release and the Pro launch is easily explained by the year of complete turmoil that followed the console’s launch in the wake of the global pandemic and chip shortages.
