Players accused of sexual assault in Canada have been let go by NHL teams

NHL teams have cut ties with four players who were charged earlier this year in a 2018 sex abuse case.

Philadelphia Flyers goalie Carter Hart, Calgary Flames forward Dillon Dube and two New Jersey Devils players, forward Michael McLeod and defenseman Cal Foote, did not receive qualifying offers to retain their restricted free agents from NHL teams on Sunday.

These four, along with former Ottawa Senators player Alex Formenton, were charged with sexual assault in February. McLeod faces two charges and the others face one charge.

Police say the attack happened in London, Ontario, after a 2018 Hockey Canada gala honoring the gold medal-winning World Junior Championship team.

“After the event, the accused and some teammates met the victim at a bar in the city center and later invited her to a hotel room, where the assault by the now accused persons took place,” London police chief Thai Truong said at a press conference in February.

The four NHL players had requested and been granted indefinite leave from their teams. Lawyers for Heart and the other players said they would fight the charges in court.

The London Free Press reported in June that no date for the trial has yet been set.

The four NHL players now become unrestricted free agents. Formenton played in Europe last season.

Contractual takeovers

Sunday was also the deadline for teams to buy out player contracts.

Buffalo Sabers forward Jeff Skinner is a free agent after the team bought out the remaining three years of his contract.

The Edmonton Oilers said they are making moves to buy out goaltender Jack Campbell. Campbell was sent to the American Hockey League this season after a disappointing stretch of more than one season for the player who became a free agent in 2022.

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Nate Schmidt (per TSN) and Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Adam Boqvist will also be bought out.

Dallas Stars defenseman Ryan Suter (for the second time) and Flyers forward Cam Atkinson were previously bought out.
