As with every Duty game, my interest in Modern Warfare III rises and falls depending on what modes or gimmicks the FPS is offering at any given time. Last summer, when War zone an added mode themed around the Amazon Prime series The boysI jumped in a few weeks ago to roast some people with my laser eyes. Now a new WWE game mode called Slam Deathmatch, along with several wrestling legends available as operators, has pulled me back into the MW3 conflict.

Season 5 of War zone And MW3 Added new base weapons, a new Battle Pass featuring WWE superstar Rhea Ripley, two more celebrity wrestler skins available for purchase (Cody Rhodes and Rey Mysterio), and a limited-time new game mode called Slam Deathmatch that runs as a cross-promo with WWE SummerSlam (which aired on August 3). It’s that last bit (and Rhea Ripley) that made me jump back into the shooter after months of absence, and boy, am I glad I did. Slam Deathmatch is absolutely insane, and a great way to get a feel for the current (and ever-changing) Codfish gun meta.

Slam Deathmatch is simple: it’s a normal Team Deathmatch on smaller maps, but you defeat enemies like in War zone instead of killing them outright, and your grenades will be disabled. When you take down a player, a WWE logo will appear above their head, and you can run up to them and long-hold your right stick to perform a finishing move on them while a WWE announcer screams in disbelief. These are not the same finishing moves as the traditional Codfish but wrestling-related maneuvers like dropping a folding chair on someone’s neck or performing Cody Rhodes’ famous Cross Rhodes finisher.

The first time I performed one of these moves I let out a shocked laugh, especially since I was using the Farah operator skin, which is played by The boys actor Claudia Domit. The rest of the match was predictably chaotic, with players flipping and punching each other all over the map, bullets flying everywhere (you can’t take damage during a finisher, but they can be interrupted by enemies), and voicecomms full of players laughing and groaning like the crowd at a big wrestling event. The next match, I was able to pull off a Rhea Ripley finisher while using my Rhea Ripley skin, and yes, it was every bit as satisfying as you’d imagine.

Slam Deathmatch is a great reminder that Duty can be fun sometimes. Your last chance to play it is today, so do it.
