Whistle: To be defined

Since starting the season 3-0-3, Union has won just once in their last 17 games (1-10-6). That lone victory came against the Revolution at Gillette Stadium on May 18.

While the Union currently sits in last place in the East with 21 points, it is worth noting that the bottom five clubs in the conference are all separated by a single point. One of those clubs is New England, who sits in 13th place in the East with 22 points.

New England is 5-0-4 overall since hosting Philadelphia in May, including a 2-0-1 away record. The Union, on the other hand, is 0-4-6 overall, with an 0-3-2 home record.

Toronto and Nashville, the two teams currently qualifying for the Best of 3 series of the playoffs, are tied at 27 and 26 points respectively.

Scouting Report: New England Revolution

New England, struggling with injuries and suspensions, took a 1-0 lead against Orlando City SC on Saturday but ultimately failed to hold on to it, losing 3-1. The Revs have now lost three of their last four games on the back of a four-game winning streak, but they still trail ninth-place Nashville SC by just four points.

New England follows up their visit to Philly with a home game against FC Dallas on Saturday night, their final match before the month-long MLS break.

Scouting Report: Philadelphia Union

Philadelphia, which is at the bottom of the East, continues to struggle to find the right players for the team while losing in all sorts of nasty ways.

Despite nursing an ankle injury, Jesus Bueno has returned to training and will be available for tomorrow’s match. Jose Martinez is back from his Copa America duties and will also be available for selection. Cavan Sullivan will be included in the matchday squad for the first time.

But perhaps most importantly is the return of seasoned goalkeeper Andre Blake.

Matchup to Watch: Glesnes & Elliott vs. New England

It is no secret that Glesnes and Elliott have made a number of untimely errors that have led to unnecessary goals from the opposition this season. With the reintroduction of Blake in goal, will they return to the defensive structure they know and excel in?

Player to watch: Andre Blake

I recognize that Blake’s return doesn’t necessarily signal a solution to the Union’s problems; his return doesn’t guarantee perfection. It will be interesting to see if there is a shift in the dynamics of the team’s back line.

Prediction: Philadelphia Union 0-0 New England Revolution

No gain, but no loss either. Consider this writer cautiously optimistic.
